Children’s Health Council Welcomes Garfield Byrd as New Chief Financial Officer

Children’s Health Council (CHC), a leading provider of mental health and learning difference services in the Bay Area, is pleased to announce the appointment of Garfield Byrd to succeed Terence Boyle as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Garfield brings exceptional experience to CHC, having served in financial leadership roles across prominent nonprofit institutions for over 20 years.

Garfield ByrdPrior to joining CHC, Garfield most recently served as the CFO at the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2), an institute renowned for its high-impact AI research and engineering. Throughout his career, Garfield has not only demonstrated strong financial leadership, but management proficiency in information technology, risk management, human resources, administration, facilities, and housing. His extensive background includes notable roles at nonprofit organizations such as the KIPP Foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation, the Pacific School of Religion, the Community Foundation Silicon Valley, and New Teacher Center. Garfield is deeply committed to community service, serving as the board treasurer for both Whose Knowledge? and Wiki Education.

Garfield earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California, following his completion of a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at the same institution.

CHC also extends their gratitude to retiring CFO, Terry Boyle, for his incredible leadership and dedication over the past 12 years. Under his guidance, CHC experienced substantial expansion, increasing its revenue from $10 million to nearly $40 million. During his exceptional tenure, CHC added a new campus for the Esther B. Clark School in San Jose, created the Sand Hill School at its Palo Alto location, and started primarily free operations in Ravenswood. In addition, Terry provided successful financial oversight and direction to many new CHC programs and services during his tenure.

CHC Board Chair Jere Brooks King stated, “On behalf of our entire board of directors, I would like to express our deepest appreciation to Terry Boyle for his outstanding leadership and wish him a fulfilling retirement. His contributions have laid a very strong financial foundation to ensure CHC’s ability to deliver the highest quality of services to support the kids, teens, and young adults in our community.”

Garfield will be working closely with Terry, until his retirement in June. This collaboration ensures a smooth transition for CHC in this critical role.
